Our History
The History of Starclaire Recreation Club
Established in 1961, Starclaire Recreation Club stands as one of the original Charlotte-Area swim & tennis clubs nestled within the historic Starmount neighborhood. The land was originally donated by Crosland and Ervin, and was meant to serve as a neighborhood pool and tennis space for the Montclaire, Starmount and Madison Park neighborhoods – in fact, this idea is how Starclaire got its moniker! The builders combined parts of each neighborhood to create the Starclaire name. From the moment of its inception, Starclaire became an instrumental meeting place for fun at the pool and competitive tennis courts!
Generations of members have come and gone, but we still have original members coming to the pool every summer, reminiscing about the “good old days”! Check out photos below from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s of the fun we’ve had throughout the decades!
In 2019 Starclaire found itself at a crossroads – sink or swim to survive. 60 years is a long time for a recreation club to sustain itself – unfortunately funds had run dry. The tennis courts had decayed, the baby pool had not been functional since 2014 and the pool had some major issues of its own. The dedicated volunteer Board of Directors that tirelessly worked to keep Starclaire afloat had run out of resources and it was time to look into other options. Thankfully, the pool was purchased by a private investment group, Starclaire Recreation Partners, LLC. in April of 2019, who is committed to restoring Starclaire to its former glory.
The future of the Club is bright – we look forward to having you be a part of an amazing community!
